Wang Chenwei
Wang Chenwei, born Nov. 1988, is a fifth year student of music composition and audio engineering at the Vienna University for Music and Performing Arts, pursuing a five-year Masters degree under the Singapore Media Development Authority’s scholarship.
He graduated from Raffles Institution’s (RI) Gifted Education Programme (GEP) with 7 academic awards.
Chenwei is a member of the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS), the Association of Composers Singapore, the Verband Deutscher Tonmeister (Association of German Audio Engineers) and the international Audio Engineering Society.
Chenwei’s music has been performed by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) yearly since 2005. At the age of 17, his composition “The Sisters Islands” won the Singapore Composer Award at the 2006 SCO International Competition and was subsequently featured on SCO’s CD album.
In 2010, Chenwei’s wind orchestra composition received the Singapore Compose prize from the Philharmonic Winds. He was also commissioned by the Ministry of Education to compose 3 pieces, including the set piece for the 2011 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging of Chinese Orchestras.
His orchestral compositions were featured in charity concerts with Singapore President S.R. Nathan (2009) and President Tony Tan (2012) as the guest-of-honour. For all his contributions to the Singaporean music scene, Chenwei was conferred the “Young Outstanding Singaporeans Award” in 2011.
Chenwei has been often featured on TV and newspaper. On 12 May 2009, a half-hour documentary “Extraordinary People” on Channel 8 presented his efforts in composing, conducting, playing 12 musical instruments and writing in 12 languages.
